After living in China for more than three years, I have become certified at HSK Level 6, the highest level possible. For the past seven years I have been immersed in the culture and language of China and have extensive interest and experience with both. I tutor all levels of Mandarin Chinese, including Mandarin Chinese 1, Mandarin Chinese 2, Mandarin Chinese 3, Mandarin Chinese 4, and Conversational Mandarin. I approach my job as a Mandarin language tutor with what I have found most tutors skip entirely: the fundamental skills of the language. This involves placing an emphasis on fundamental grammar because it provides students with an easier path to language acquisition. Additionally, I truly believe it is impossible to separate the culture from the language. To this end I have found it useful to include my passion for Chinese history, folk opera, into language lessons. The majority of my studies have been completed in Northern China which has provided me with a standard Mandarin accent but I am also quite familiar with regional expressions and slang. Being an American who has invested substantial time and energy into studying Mandarin Chinese, I know exactly how challenging the language can be. This has given me the perspective needed to be patient and compassionate with students who need additional help in their language acquisition goals.
